Crown Heights Date Night: Jazz, Cocktails, and Vinyl at Kissa Kissa

Crown Heights Date Night

Jazz, cocktails, and vinyl at Kissa Kissa — a date night that’s not the usual dinner-and-drinks.

Every neighborhood has its go-to date spots — the reliable Italian place, the rooftop with the view, the cocktail bar that is good enough but never quite memorable. Crown Heights has all of those. What it also has — and what no other neighborhoods do — is a jazz kissa: a vinyl listening bar where the music is the centerpiece, the cocktails are excellent, and the entire room is designed to make conversation feel easy and intimate.

The Atmosphere

Does the Heavy Lifting

First dates are stressful. The anxiety of where to sit, what to talk about, whether the music is too loud or the vibe is too sterile — all of it adds friction. Kissa Kissa removes most of that friction by design.

The room is small and warm, with low lighting that flatters everyone. The sound system fills the space with vinyl jazz at a volume that sits perfectly between background and foreground — present enough to create atmosphere, gentle enough that you never have to raise your voice.

If the conversation hits a quiet moment, you are not sitting in awkward silence — you are listening to a 1960s pressing of something beautiful. It is the best possible safety net.

The Drinks

The Cocktails

A date night bar lives or dies on its drinks, and Kissa Kissa delivers. The cocktail menu is inventive without being gimmicky — well-balanced drinks that complement the listening experience rather than competing with it. The bartenders are knowledgeable and happy to make recommendations, which is a natural conversation starter in itself.

There is also complimentary popcorn, which sounds like a small detail but is actually a clutch move on a date. It gives your hands something to do, creates a shared experience, and pairs better with cocktails than you would expect.

The Space

The Backyard Patio

Kissa Kissa backyard patio with string lights and cozy seating — outdoor date night spot on Franklin Avenue Crown Heights Brooklyn

Kissa Kissa has a covered all-seasons backyard that offers a change of pace if you want to step outside. In warmer months, it is one of the best outdoor spaces on Franklin Avenue — intimate, well-designed, and far enough from the street to feel private.

The ability to move between the main room and the backyard gives a date natural rhythm. Start inside with the music and a first round, move outside for a change of scenery, then come back in for another record and another drink. The evening builds itself.

While you are here, take a moment to notice the original oil paintings on the walls — six portraits of jazz legends by co-founder Nina Barry. Each one has a story worth asking about.
