Two Kinds of Night
Kissa Kissa is a listening bar, and it is also a bar. Most of the week those two things get along fine. On a packed Saturday they can pull in different directions, and more than one guest has told us the jazz was hard to hear over a lively room. They had a point. So rather than shush anyone, we’re naming the nights.
It’s a label on the night, not a rule at your table. The door is never locked, nobody gets hushed, and you don’t need to know which night it is to walk in. Want to hear every note of Blue Train? Come Sunday. Want to hear it with six friends? Come Friday.
Listening Nights
Full album sides, front to back. We ask for low voices and phones down at the bar so the room can hear the record. This is the closest the room gets to the Tokyo kissas it was modeled on.
Social Nights
Same records, same system, livelier room. Bring friends, lean across the bar, talk about your week. It’s quietest right after we open and gets louder as the night fills in. The music is still why the room exists. On these nights it just has company.
Seven Days, Two Volumes
One exception, one tip. Verve Mondays are always Listening Nights. Weekends are always Social Nights. The first hour or two after opening is the quietest the room gets, so if you want a Saturday side heard front to back, come early. The calendar has what’s playing.
Let the record get a word in.
That’s the whole rulebook. On a Listening Night it means low voices, phones down at the bar, and letting a side play through. On a Social Night it means talking freely, though if you can’t hear the horn, neither can the table next to you.
Nobody will enforce this at your table. The Now Playing board by the door tells you which night it is, and the rest is up to you. You don’t have to love jazz to love Kissa Kissa.

Walk-ins are always welcome. Thursday through Saturday fills up, so book ahead for groups of up to six. Bigger than six? Ask us about a private event.
